Story Tellers Limited ("Story Tellers", "we", "us") provides English reading, writing and communication tutoring in Hong Kong. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use storytellers.com.hk, our online courses and learning tools, or get in touch with us, and how we use, share, keep and protect it.

We handle personal data in line with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) of Hong Kong.

1. The personal data we collect

  • When you contact us: your name, email address, phone number and message, whether you use our contact form, email, phone or WhatsApp.
  • When we set up an account: the student's name, a parent or guardian's name and contact details, a login email address and password (passwords are stored in encrypted form), and details that help us place a student in the right course, such as their year group.
  • When students learn with us: course enrolments and progress, quiz and activity results, and the writing and other work students create in our courses and learning tools.
  • When you visit our website: cookies and basic technical information, such as your browser type and the pages you visit. We measure website visits in aggregate, without identifying individual visitors. See our Cookie Policy for details.

2. Children's personal data

Most of our students are under 18. Accounts for children are set up with the consent of a parent or guardian, and we only collect the information we need to teach and support the student. Parents and guardians can contact us at any time to see, correct or ask us to delete their child's personal data.

3. How we use personal data

We use personal data to:

  • reply to your enquiries;
  • provide lessons, courses and learning tools, and give students feedback on their work;
  • track students' progress and share it with their parents or guardians;
  • contact you about lessons, schedules, fees and changes to our services;
  • keep our website and accounts secure and working properly; and
  • improve our courses and website.

We will not use your personal data for direct marketing unless you have given us your consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time by contacting us, and we will stop.

4. Who we share it with

We do not sell personal data. We only share it with:

  • service providers who host and run our website and learning platform, and who provide our email and messaging services, only so they can provide those services to us;
  • professional advisers, such as accountants and lawyers, where needed; and
  • government or law enforcement bodies, where the law requires it.

Some of our service providers store data outside Hong Kong. When this happens, we take reasonable steps to make sure the data is protected to a standard comparable to that required in Hong Kong.

5. How long we keep it

We keep personal data only for as long as we need it for the purposes above. Enquiries that do not lead to enrolment are deleted after a reasonable period. Student records are kept while the student is with us and for a limited time afterwards, for example to answer questions from parents or meet legal and accounting requirements. After that, we delete the data or make it anonymous.

6. How we protect it

We take reasonable steps to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss or misuse. Our website uses encrypted (HTTPS) connections, accounts are password-protected, and access to personal data is limited to the people who need it to teach and support our students.

7. Your right to see and correct your data

You have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you or your child, and to ask us to correct it if it is wrong. To make a request, contact us using the details below. We will reply within 40 days, as the Ordinance requires, and we may charge a reasonable fee for providing a copy of the data.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top.
